Nairobi, 9 April 2026
UNHCR Kenya has introduced a comprehensive assistance programme targeting disabled refugees, elderly populations, and LGBTI community members through local partnerships and a dedicated 24-hour helpline.

Accessing Support Through Multiple Channels

Refugees requiring immediate assistance can now access support through UNHCR’s dedicated helpline by calling *1517 [1]. This service operates around the clock and connects vulnerable individuals with specialist organisations working in partnership with UNHCR to deliver targeted services [1]. The programme specifically focuses on persons with disabilities, older persons, and members of the LGBTI community, who face heightened risks due to their difficult living conditions and increased susceptibility to abuse and exploitation [1].

Specialised Services for Disabled and Elderly Refugees

Through its partner network, UNHCR provides specialised services including psychosocial support, counselling, financial assistance, and assistive devices on a case-by-case basis [1]. HIAS operates four offices across Kenya to serve persons with disabilities and older persons, with locations in Mimosa (Mbaruk Road, Off Muchai Drive, Off Ngong Road), Eastleigh (Juja Road Estate House number 59), Kayole (Nasra Garden Estate next to Bee Centre), and Kawangware (Off Naivasha road, near Skymatt Supermarket) [1]. Each office maintains dedicated telephone lines for immediate contact and assistance [1].

Financial Support for Elderly Refugees

The 70+ Initiative represents UNHCR’s targeted Urban Cash Transfer Programme specifically designed for older persons [1]. Refugees aged 70 years or over who are currently living and registered in Nairobi or Mombasa can contact UNHCR via the helpline on 1517 or send an email to kenairv@unhcr.org [1]. The programme also accommodates caregivers or family members who wish to register to support elderly refugees, with applicants encouraged to mention this requirement when contacting UNHCR [1].

LGBTI Community Support Networks

Three specialist organisations provide comprehensive support for LGBTI refugees across Kenya. HOYMAS Kenya, a community-based organisation in Nairobi, offers promotion and safeguarding of human rights, access to safe spaces and healthcare services, organisational development, empowerment programmes for MSM/MSW community members, and security training for LGBTIQ+ individuals [1]. The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission operates as an independent institution working for legal and policy reforms towards equality and full inclusion of sexual and gender minorities in Kenya, contactable at 020 4400525 [1]. The Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya serves as an umbrella organisation advocating for LGBTQI+ rights, providing counselling and legal aid whilst raising awareness through education, advocacy campaigns, and lobbying for law reform and anti-discrimination policies [1].
