Sammy Omollo received the SportPesa League Coach of the Month award during a deeply emotional moment, dedicating the honour to his deceased wife on Mother’s Day whilst transforming APS Bomet’s fortunes with a perfect April record.

Perfect Record Delivers Emotional Victory

The former Kenyan international defender’s recognition comes during a deeply personal time, following the loss of his wife earlier this year [1]. Receiving the award on Mother’s Day, Omollo delivered an emotional tribute, dedicating the honour to his late wife, affectionately known as ‘Mama Denzel,’ whilst acknowledging the support of his family and team [1]. ‘Today being Mother’s Day, I want to dedicate this award to my beloved wife, Mama Denzel. She was an inspiration to me and supported me throughout my coaching journey. I miss her, and this award is for her,’ said Omollo after receiving his customised trophy and KES 75,000 prize award [1]. On the pitch, APS Bomet enjoyed a flawless April, registering a 100 percent win record [1][2]. The team secured victories over Sofapaka, Ulinzi Stars, and Posta Rangers—Omollo’s former club—keeping clean sheets in all three matches [1].

Remarkable Turnaround Under Pressure

Despite the impressive run, the coach struck a measured tone, emphasising the work still ahead as the team pushes to secure its top-flight status [1]. ‘We know there’s still work to do to secure safety, so I’m challenging the boys to keep working hard. There is still a lot of football to play, and anything can happen,’ he added [1]. APS Bomet’s strong momentum has continued beyond April, with the side extending their form to five consecutive wins and an eight-match unbeaten streak [1][2]. A recent 2-0 away victory over Mathare United has further boosted their survival hopes [1]. The club currently sits in 12th place with 37 points, five points clear of the relegation zone, which is occupied by 16th-placed Ulinzi Stars [2].

Coaching Excellence Recognised Across the League

Omollo’s achievement places him amongst an elite group of coaches recognised since the SportPesa League Coach of the Month award was introduced in October 2025 [2]. Previous winners include Charles Akonnor, who claimed the honour twice in October 2025 and January 2026, Peter Okidi for November 2025 and February 2026, and Fred Ambani for December 2025 and March 2026 [2]. For the April 2026 award, Omollo beat fellow coaches Xavier Francis, Godfrey Odour, and Nicholas Muyoti [2]. Mara Sugar head coach Francis Xavier finished as the runner-up for the monthly award after also guiding his side to three wins, albeit from one additional fixture [1].

Building on a Foundation of Resilience

Since joining APS Bomet in December 2025, Omollo has overseen 17 matches, achieving six wins, six draws, and five losses—a record that demonstrates steady improvement under challenging circumstances [2]. The experienced coach has built a reputation for rescuing teams, having previously kept Shabana FC and Posta Rangers in top-flight football [2]. With three games remaining in the season, APS Bomet will face formidable opponents including Bandari FC, AFC Leopards, and Tusker FC as they seek to cement their Premier League status [2]. Omollo’s tactical acumen and motivational leadership have not only transformed the club’s survival prospects but also provided a compelling example of how experienced local coaching talent can achieve remarkable results in competitive football environments.
